This charming and ageless musical is as entertaining today as it was when it opened on Broadway in November 1959 with Mary Martin singing and strumming her guitar.) THE SOUND OF MUSIC is based on Maria von Trapp’s autobiography “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.” Set in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria Rainer, a free-spirited postulant hired by the widowed Captain Georg von Trapp as governess to his 7 children. The stern Captain’s heart is finally captured by Maria and they marry. After returning from their honeymoon, they find that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis and the Captain is ordered back to service. But the family has other ideas. They decide to escape to Switzerland and freedom. “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” remains one of the most endearing and inspirational songs of all time.
