Meredith Willson’s THE MUSIC MAN

Book, Music and Lyrics by Meredith Willson

Based on a story by Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey

By Special Arrangement with Music Theatre International

This rousing, Tony-award-winning musical follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he journeys from city to city conning people into buying instruments and uniforms for a boy’s band.  Not knowing anything about bands or instruments, he skips town with the cash just before instruments and uniforms arrive.  Happening upon River City, Iowa, he “gets his foot stuck in the door” by falling for the local librarian.  This critically acclaimed Broadway classic is an all-American institution, due to quirky characters, charmingly predictable dramatic situations, rousing marches, a barbershop quartet and lovely ballads.  Meredith Willson calls THE MUSIC MAN his “Valentine.”  His note to directors at the beginning of the script is quite specific:  “The humor of this piece depends upon its technical faithfulness to the real small-town Iowans of 1912 who certainly did not think they were funny at all.”  Therein lies the secret of comedy – play it for real and laughs will abound!!  Audiences have been laughing since this opened in 1957.  The talented staff, cast and crew include:
