Conejo Players Theatre in Thousand Oaks is proud to present its very first Conejo Youth Theatre production: Elton John and Tim Rice's AIDA. AIDA is a contemporary take on the classic tale of the love between an Egyptian soldier and an enslaved Nubian princess -- a love that condemns them to death, but ultimately transcends the vast cultural differences between their two warring nations, heralding an unprecedented time of peace and prosperity. With a pop/rock score that features stirring ballads and rousing choral numbers penned by music legend Elton John, with lyrics by Broadway and West End legend Tim Rice, AIDA is a modern crowd pleaser that embraces the eternal themes of love and redemption.

Directed by Shawn W. Lanz, assistant directed by Courtney Potter, produced by Karen Graham-Hanna and Karen Staitman, choreographed by Arryck Adams and Tami Keaton, and musically directed by Paul Duffy, AIDA features a talented cast of 24 young adults from around the Conejo Valley and beyond.

AIDA took home the 2000 Tony award for Best Original Score (Elton John & Tim Rice), as well as the Tony for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for the show's star, Heather Headley. Originally conceived as an animated feature for Disney (based on a children's book about Verdi's AIDA by opera star Leontyne Price), the musical was first presented in Atlanta in 1998 under the name Elaborate Lives: The Legend of Aida. A revamped version premiered in Chicago in 1999 before opening at Broadway's Palace Theatre in 2000; it closed after almost 2,000 performances in 2004.

In his four-decade career, singer/songwriter Sir Elton John has sold over 200 million records and won five Grammy awards, one Academy Award (for his and Tim Rice's song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," from Disney's animated feature The Lion King), a Golden Globe award, and a Tony award for AIDA. John's collaboration with Rice on The Lion King produced a successful partnership that resulted in a stage version of the film, followed by songs for the animated feature The Road to El Dorado, and the music and lyrics for AIDA. His latest Broadway venture is the Tony-nominated Billy Elliot: The Musical, currently playing at the Imperial Theatre in New York City. John is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Order of the British Empire.

Sir Tim Rice first found success as Andrew Lloyd Webber's frequent collaborator on musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. In 1992, Rice completed the work started by the late lyricist Howard Ashman on Disney's animated feature Aladdin, which led to his partnership for the Walt Disney Company with composer Elton John. Rice is currently working on a musical version of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker. He is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, is an Academy Award and Grammy award winner, and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1994.
