Plot Summary:

Calling all Conejo Valley kids! Come on down for your chance to be a part of our second Children's Theatre production of 2018: THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH, JR. Even surrounded by dozens of toys, Milo is bored. Nothing interests him at all. The Demons of Ignorance are certain he will be their next victim, telling him, “If you get the urge to do anything – don’t. It could be dangerous.” Then the Phantom Tollbooth comes to the rescue!

Norton Juster's beloved children's book is given full musical treatment in this version of the modern tale of a boy who must save the princesses Rhyme and Reason and reunite the brother Kings who rule over the cities of Dictionopolis and Digitopolis. Aided by a trusty time-keeping dog, Tock, Milo successfully brings harmony to the Land of Wisdom and learns many things about words and numbers along his journey.

Perhaps the most important lesson he takes with him, however, is that everything we learn has a purpose and whatever we do affects everything and everyone. When he returns home, he realizes there is never a reason to be bored in a world full of so many things to discover. ~ RATED G

Character Breakdown:

Looking for talented young people between the ages of 5 and 18.

+ Milo: A boy who is completely understimulated by everything around him. He goes on an extraordinary journey (thanks to the Tollbooth) that helps him to see the world as he never saw it before. Vocal range: D5 - A3.

+ Demons: Dark and scary entities that persuade Milo into not doing anything. They are sinister and love to be in control. Vocal range: D5 - B3.

+ The Tollbooth: A “voice-over”-type role that will also perform other characters. Vocal range: D5 - B3.

+ Narrators: Non-singing parts that require focus and good public speaking skills. They move the story along throughout the entire play.

+ Whether Man: An eccentric individual, not to be confused with a "weather man.” Must have good comedic timing. Vocal range: C5 - B3.

+ Lethargarians: Slow-motion, unmotivated, incredibly lackadaisical beings, who fall asleep at the drop of a hat. Will perform other roles as well.

+ Tock: An extremely energetic, lovable dog with an alarm clock in his (or her) belly. Needs to be comfortable crawling and sliding across the floor on his or her knees. Vocal range: D5 - Bb3.

+ Azaz: The King of Words! Must be a strong actor. Vocal range: D5 - D4.

+ Mathemagician: The King of Numbers. Must be high energy, with a good sense of rhythm and comedic timing. Vocal range: D5 - Bb3.

+ Rhyme and Reason: Princesses who are banished to the Castle in the Air. Must have strong voices. Ballet experience a plus, but not required. Vocal range: Db5 - Bb3.

+ Vendors: Marketplace sellers of all types of words in Dictionopolis. Non-speaking roles, but with musical solos. Will also perform other roles. Vocal range: D5 - D4.

+ Royal Subjects: The Guard, Page, Advisors, and Lackeys are all subjects of the royal kingdom of Dictionopolis, led by King Azaz. Non-singing roles that will also perform other roles.

+ Miners: The subjects of Digitopolis. Need actors who aren't afraid to be ridiculously silly onstage. Vocal range: A4 - G3.
