PLOT SUMMARY

In Nude with Pineapple Charley Turner has married Clara Turner. They look on life from totally different angles.  Charley Turner hates the brush business into which Clara and her family would dump him. Clara fails to see why Charley’s mind should turn to paints, why he has no interest in dressing up and going out, why-he oh, there are lots of things about Charley that Clara simply cannot bear quite as there is a great deal about Clara that makes Charley think all sorts of things

Clara’s family settle matters, Charley is shipped off to a private sanitarium.  There he meets Melodie who is in the sanitarium suffering from spells of melancholia.  The two fall in love.  Behind the barred windows of the institution, Charley has his first opportunity to express himself as he has always desired.  He produces a painting that the critics hail as marvelous.  And Charley is famous.  Clara hears about this and  Charley interests her now.  But he has fallen in love with Melodie and she most certainly has fallen in love with him.  The solution of this strange complication with it yet stranger background remains a secret until you have seen Nude with Pineapple.

DIRECTORS NOTE

It has been an honor to be part of Conejo Players’ history.  Who could imagine directing the first show that Conejo Players founder Dwight Hauser did in Glaziers Barn 50 years ago.  My, how times have changed.  Unknown to me, the original title of the show is Behold This Dreamer.  But Dwight got permission to instead use the other title Nude with Pineapple.  Just the kind of title that would get the attention of Conejo Valley theatre-goers in 1958

Nude with Pineapple has been a real thrill for me as Director, not only because it is fun, but of the content and message of the play.  I was struck by how much the philosophical questions remain the same after all these years.  Do we never learn!

But mostly I was thrilled to do this play because of the fine cast I was able to assemble.  I am so pleased at working again with Laurence Falkner as Charley Turner.  Adding to the merriment is Judy Diderrich as Melodie, Christina La Forgia as Clara Turner as well as Mike Moffat as Mr. John Strickler.  Rounding out this excellent cast Rick Steinberg as Mr. Wellington Harris, Linda Schaver as Constance Lane, Bob Artz as Dr. Ephraim Tanneyday, Jim Diderrich as Blessing / One by One (thanks Judy!) Keith High as D.D.D., Jery Nehring as Piggles and Ken Endress for doubling both as the on-stage Waiter and off-stage Stage Manger
